This year sees the event restructured from a 16 player invitational into a 64 player event with approximately half the players qualifying and the other half invited. In the opening qualifying event which took place on Sunday 14th February at the Leader Club Billard in Sucy en Brie, Paris, it was Germanys Oliver Ortmann who took the top spot to book himself a trip to Vegas. In a strong field that followed on from the Euro Tour stop that week, the 42 year-old Ortmann beat Japans Yukio Akakariyama to take victory. The 1995 World Champion now joins countrymen Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert for a crack at the Masters crown. To emphasise the strength of the line up, beaten semi-finalists were Englands recently crowned World Team Champion Karl Boyes and Bruno Muratore of Italy. The following Saturday 20th February, it was Hollands Hudji See who made it through via the qualifier at Thurstons in Rotterdam, Netherlands. See, currently ranked No.27 in Europe, was a runner-up at the 2007 World Straight Pool Championship and this will be his Masters debut. The Dutchman won through 11-9 in a thriller against Belgiums Serge Das. The match was finely poised at 8-8 before the 28 year-old See pulled away. On Friday 26th February, the cream of Norwegian pool came together at the Oscar Kong Pool Club in Bergen and it was Tron Engebakk (Norway) who won through to take the Vegas trip. Finally at Frame Billiard Club in Lodz, Poland on Saturday 27th, Polish youngster Bartosz Rozwadowski carved his way through a high quality field to book a dream trip to Las Vegas. The 19 year old from Kielce was a silver medallist at the 2008 European Junior Pool Championships and he took the honours, defeating Wojciech Trajdos, a former winner on the Euro Tour, 9-5 in the final. It was a sterling performance from Rozwadowski as the line-up in Lodz contained such names as Mateusz Sniegocki, Radoslaw Babica and Mariusz Skoneczny, who are ranked 5, 22 and 26 in Europe respectively. Working with an array of respected partners around the world, the qualifying events take in France, England, Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Russia, Spain, Canada, USA, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan. This will give every pool player in the world the opportunity to win a trip to Las Vegas and mix it with the worlds elite in the Masters. Each qualifying event will carry an entry fee and have, in most cases a maximum field of 32 players. The winner of each event wins a trip to Vegas, to include flight and accommodation, to compete in the Masters and there are cash prizes for high finishers depending on entries. The formats for the qualifying events are determined by the local organisers and all qualifiers, dates and contact details are listed on www.matchroompool.com. After 17 years as a 16-player invitational competition, the Masters, one of the longest established tournaments in pool, has moved to 64 players and will run from Wednesday, May 12 to Sunday, May 16, will take place at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. Working in conjunction with Cuesports International, the Masters takes place during the annual BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships, which sees thousands of players and fans flock to the Riviera for a lengthy festival of pool. The first two days of the main event in May feature double elimination play on a multi-table set-up as the field reduces from 64 down to 32. The event then goes to single elimination and the last 16 is played out in a single table arena setting in front of the TV cameras, culminating in the final on the evening of Sunday, May 16. Television is produced by Matchroom Sport and will be seen as 15 x one hour programmes in 14 countries around the world with more to be added to the list.

Pool Players News – DECC hosts state 8-ball championship

February 5th, 2010 admin No comments

Pool Players News – About 2,000 stick-wielding competitors are descending on Duluth this week in search of bragging rights. The draw? Not a hockey tournament or a martial arts match but the state 8-ball championship, sponsored by MOMA short for the Minnesota Operators of Music and Amusement the folks who supply pool tables to bars and taverns throughout the Midwest. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event, which will distribute about $80,000 in prize money to the states top pool players. A breakdown of participants reveals a field thats about 80 percent male and 20 percent female, said Wayne Herron, the tournament director. The caliber of play promises to be top-notch, said Mike Fieldhammer, a professional billiard instructor from the Twin Cities and competitor in the events master division. I would put Minnesota in the top five pool-playing states in the nation right up there with Texas, Florida, New York and California,

Fieldhammer said. So, if you want to take in some world-class pool, head down to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center today or this weekend. Competition will run all day Friday and Saturday and through the first half of Sunday. This is high-intensity competition, and emotions run high, too. But everyone carries a stick, so that helps keep people in line, joked Bob Thomas, a MOMA member and tournament planner. When asked what has kept him coming back to the state tournament for six years running, Brad Guza of Kellogg, Minn., said: Its both the competition and the friendships you form. Guza also credits his tournament experience for improving his level of play. It helps to compete at state, because everyone tries to shoot their best game when they get here, he said. Theres no telling who youll meet at the tournament. Guzas first opponent in singles competition Thursday was Bill Frisby of Floodwood, who has remained active and competitive in the sport despite being confined to a wheelchair. Frisby, 67, has been playing pool for 53 years but said adjusting to playing from a wheelchair wasnt easy. You have to change your whole game, he said. Its very challenging, but I enjoy it.

As a member of the National Wheelchair Pool Players Association, Frisby hopes to encourage other disabled people to take up the sport, too. Our mission is to get people out in the community, and pool is a tool to get people involved, he said, adding: Pool is community. Northern Minnesota and Canada have produced some particularly fine pool players, said Cody Kendall, 24, of Knife River, a participant in the state tournament. It seems that anywhere thats cold a lot is going to breed a lot of good pool players, he said. Its a good, inexpensive indoor activity. But Kendall said the future may not bode as well for the Twin Ports as a source of elite pool players. There really are no venues for underage players any more, he noted, predicting that future generations of pool players from the area will not benefit from the same opportunity for competitive play that their forbears enjoyed.

Pool Players News – Reyes Captures Fifth Derby City Classic All Around Title

February 1st, 2010 admin No comments

Efren Reyes has been considered the best pool players alive for the last decade or so, give or take a few. As the 12th Annual Derby City Classic kicked off, many top handicappers asked if Reyes had what it took to take down yet another All-Around title. There question was answered Saturday evening as Reyes n ot only won the 9-ball division but sealed the All-Around title several rounds before the end of the event. The All-Around

The $25,000 added 9-ball division kicked off on Wednesday, January 27 with 257 of the worlds finest professionals vying for the $16,000 first place prize.

The semifinals witnessed a great match between Shannon Murphy and Efren Reyes. At one point, Reyes was trailing in the match, 4-1. Reyes would parlay a few good rolls in to a lead and victory to earn his shot at the 9-ball title against Rocket Rodney Morris.

As the finals kicked off, the scuttlebutt around the arena was split between to the two players. The stands filled to see who would win the rematch of the 1996 U.S. Open finals that saw Morris emerge as the victor.

The match went back and forth for a few games until Reyes gradually eraned a lead. The turning point came when Morris won a game only to be a victim of a freakish scratch on the break. Though the b attle dragged on for a few more shots, Reyes came through in the end and sealed the victory, 7-4.

For Reyes , this is his fifth trip to the winners circle as the All-Around champion in twelve years. His name litters the roster of past champions in all three divisions. His sucess this year is not limited to the 9-ball and All Around though. Reyes snapped off Fatboy 20-Ball event and added $8,500 to his total winnings of $44,500 for the span of the 9 day event, excluding the proceeds picked up during his one-on-one matchups.
